Steven Morgan, Managing Director ICG Markets Operations & Technology, Citi

Steven Morgan works in Citi Capital Markets Operations and Technology (“O&T”) Division within the Investment Bank. Steven is uniquely placed within the Firm, as he is one of a small number of leaders who is responsible for integrating Operations and Technology functions.

In Steven’s role, he has been empowered with autonomy to modernize the way of working within Citi and his group. He often refers to his rebranded group, Operations Solutions (“OpSo”), as an internal start up. The team focuses on innovative technology for Operations professionals. OpSo ultimately deliver solutions to the Firm’s internal businesses, clients and industry partners.

Steven leads a team of over 900 people, spanning across 15 countries in four continents. His Settlements Operations team is responsible for clearing over $1 trillion dollars of assets, per day, in over 55 countries. Their roles range from client service, process design & re-engineering, exception handling, and risk mitigation. They work closely with a variety of internal groups, mainly Middle Office, Sales and Trading. His Technology team manages over 100 systems for Citi. Their goal is to simplify the platform by streamlining their legacy systems into 20 newly integrated applications. The group uses the latest software applications to develop their proprietary containerized micro services platform. Their core roles range from Software Development, Data Scientists, Business Development and Strategy, Solutions Concierges, Project Management, and various additional roles.

Steven began his career at the Bank of England in 1992. Prior to joining Citi in 2009, he held senior roles at various banks within their Operations Division. Steven was selected to manage a team at the age of 24 and went onto to manage multiple areas within Operations as part of his development. Steven took on his first global role within Lehman Brothers at 29 years old, where he was relocated to New York. During Steven’s time at Lehman Brothers he was promoted to Managing Director at the age of 33, a career highlight for him.

Steven’s prior responsibilities have presented him with the opportunity to travel to over 30 countries, a temporary assignment in Germany and to live in New York three times. He has estimated that over 7,000 people’s careers have passed through his management responsibilities.
